Late comeback dooms Men’s Volleyball in five set loss at (14) Missouri Baptist

Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Golden Eagles got off to an outstanding start against the 14th ranked team in the land, winning each of the first two sets. Missouri Baptist would storm all the way back to take the last three however and down Cornerstone in their second consecutive five-set match over the last two days. CU ends their Spring Break road trip now as they return home this weekend for two WHAC matches against ranked Indiana Tech and Lourdes. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 2 Missouri Baptist – 3 (25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 19-25, 8-15)
 
Set One:
  • David Galanes helped Cornerstone go on a 5-0 run early in set one to take a 9-5 advantage.
  • Cornerstone would maintain a 4 to 5 point lead throughout set one as Brunno Peres added a service ace to make it 17-12. 
  • Auston Bonte helped Missouri Baptist get back into the set with a kill that made it 22-19. 
  • Brunno Peres and David Galanes recorded big kills down the stretch and Missouri Baptist tallied a service error to end set one in favor of CU, 25-20. 
Set Two:
  • Andrew Galanes put away the first two points of set two as Cornerstone carried the momentum on the road. 
  • Austone Bonte again recorded a big MBU kill to give them the lead back at 7-5. 
  • Cornerstone just slowly chipped away to get back in front and maintain a lead. Patrick Voloch recorded a service ace that put CU ahead 20-15. 
  • Andrew Galanes then capped off the set with yet another kill to help Cornerstone take set two the same way they did set one, 25-20. 
Set Three:
  • In a do or die situation, Missouri Baptist rose to the occasion taking control of set three early with a 10-6 lead on a service ace from Michael Olson. 
  • Three consecutive errors between the two sides then made it 11-8 in favor of Missouri Baptist. 
  • Missouri Baptist then rattled off a 7-0 run that again saw service aces as a key component to the run to go on top 19-10. 
  • A kill by Brunno Peres would cut the deficit to seven, but that would be as close as Cornerstone would get as MBU's Michael Anderson recorded a kill on set point to take the third, 25-16. 
Set Four:
  • Missouri Baptist would use an early timeout in set four after David Galanes and Brunno Peres recorded kills and the Golden Eagles led 4-2. 
  • Michael Olson recorded a kill for MBU that tied set four at five. 
  • Cornerstone would then use their first timeout after a 6-3 MBU run that saw kills from nearly every hitter and a service ace from Milos Markovic. The Spartans led 14-11 at the time of the timeout. 
  • After the timeout, Patrick Voloch recorded a dump kill to bring CU back within two points. 
  • The Spartans immediately responded with a 4-0 run to take an 18-12 lead. 
  • Cornerstone was unable to comeback as the serve of Missouri Baptist cost them in a 25-19 set four loss to force a second straight day of a five-set match. 
Set Five:
  • In the fifth, both teams struggled with service errors early as three of them were recorded in the first five points. 
  • Missouri Baptist then found their ace rhythm again recording two as they took a 7-4 lead and forced a Golden Eagle timeout. 
  • Missouri Baptist continued to dominate the fifth set, going on a 4-0 run with a pair of kills from Auston Bonte to increase the lead to 11-5. 
  • Cornerstone was unable to comeback as they fell 15-8 in the fifth to drop the match, 3-2. 
 
By the Numbers 
.423 – Brunno Peres led the team with a .423 hitting percentage. 
12/14 – Andrew Galanes recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. 
13-3 – Missouri Baptist recorded 13 service aces to the Golden Eagles three on the match. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone heads home for WHAC contests against ranked Indiana Tech and Lourdes this weekend. Action begins Friday vs. (15) Indiana Tech at 7 p.m.
