SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Golden Eagles run in the WHAC Tournament has come to an end with a pair of tough losses, falling 2-1 in eight innings to Madonna and 7-2 to Concordia. CU falls one game short of making the WHAC Tournament Championship as they end their season at 21-21 overall. The young CU roster will now hit the offseason and begin preparations for the 2024 season.
Game One Recap: Madonna – 2 Cornerstone – 1 (Eight Innings)
- The first game of the day was a tried-and-true pitching duel with both starters in Mikayla Meade and Maeson Schlaud going complete games. The two very different style pitchers would be incredibly effective with a total of five hits given up in the game with Schlaud striking out 11 and Meade striking out two.
- Cornerstone kept the rhythm of early offense with a run in the second inning to take a lead. Molly Poole singled to left center to score Moriah Sprague who had doubled to lead-off the inning. CU led 1-0 through two innings of work.
- Madonna would find the response to tie the game on an RBI infield single to make it 1-1.
- A total of two hits was given up between the top of the fifth and the bottom of the seventh as the game stayed tied at one going into extra innings.
- CU would go down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth inning.
- Mikayla Meade would give up a walk-off home run to the lead-off batter Gabby Toth in the bottom of the eighth, ending the game in a 2-1 loss.
Game Two Recap: Concordia – 7 Cornerstone – 2
- In their third game of the day, Concordia was the team to get off to the good start. The Cardinals scored one run in the bottom of the first off starter Alyssa Braam. Katie Tobias singled and an error in left field allowed Payton Lewis to score making it 1-0.
- Senior Sydney Carr hit her third home run of the tournament and first of the day to immediately tie the game at one in the top of the second inning.
- Concordia had a response of their own in the bottom of the second, erupting for six runs. After Alyssa Braam got a strikeout, a walk and an error would put two runners on. CUAA then recorded five consecutive RBI hits off Braam and the new pitcher in McKenna Gilde to lead 6-1. Cornerstone finally got the final two outs to get out of the inning, but Concordia was able to add one more run to bring their advantage to 7-1.
- In the top of the third, Cornerstone was sat down 1-2-3 bringing the Cardinals hitters right back to the plate. McKenna Gilde was able to keep the Cardinals scoreless though in the bottom of the third as the deficit stayed six runs through three innings.
