FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Cornerstone saw a goal in each half in their first road game of 2023 as they earned a 2-0 victory to start Labor Day Weekend at Saint Francis.
Tori Woodwyk was dominant at creating shots in the first half and eventually found the net. A second half goal then followed from defender
Kaitlynn Sal to earn the 2-0 victory. Cornerstone is now 1-1-0 on the year as they begin a five game homestand a week from tomorrow vs. Taylor University at CU Soccer Field.
Game Recap: Cornerstone - 2 Saint Francis – 0
First Half
- The Golden Eagles got off to a great start with their first real threat coming in the 10th minute. Off a corner, Tori Woodwyk was able to get a header on net that was blocked. Seconds later she got another header that missed just wide of net.
- Cornerstone dominated the possession seeing multiple shots from Gracie Gortmaker and Tori Woodwyk throughout the first half.
- Due to the heat, a hydration break was taken in the 24th minute.
- Later in the second half, Saint Francis started to find their footing recording two shots in the 28th and 30th minutes, forcing one Morgan Scholten save.
- In the 39th minute, Cornerstone was finally able to break through with a goal. Tori Woodwyk once again found a shot off a nice assist from Ella Bosscher to go up 1-0.
- Cornerstone led 1-0 at the half with seven shots and five on net.
Second Half
- Saint Francis came out firing in the second half, recording more shots in the first five minutes than they did in the entire first half with three.
- Despite the shots, Cornerstone was able to counter and earn a corner kick in the 52nd minute. Off the corner, CU was able to keep possession and score in the 53rd minute, as defender Kaitlynn Sal found the net to make it 2-0.
- Just like in the first half the referees called for a hydration break in the second half. The two teams paused in the 66th minute with the score still 2-0.
- Saint Francis had no response in the final 20 minutes as the Golden Eagles earned their first victory in 2023.
