Jaxi Long leads Women's Basketball to an 84-49 victory over Defiance

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Women's Basketball returned home as they welcomed new WHAC team Defiance and greeted them with a big 84-49 victory. Jaxi Long was unstoppable for the Golden Eagles as she led the way with a team high 31 points as the defense of Cornerstone forced 22 turnovers. The win streak extends to four for the Golden Eagles as they improve to 5-5 (4-0) on the year. Women's Basketball remains at home as they take on Cleary on Saturday, December 14, starting at 1 p.m.

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 84 Defiance - 49

First Quarter – Cornerstone – 17 Defiance - 10
  • Cornerstone and Defiance started the game in a defensive battle as the game is tied at two through the first three-minutes of the game.
  • A quick 5-0 run by the Golden Eagles saw them take a 7-4 lead over Defiance thanks to a three from Jaxi Long and a layup from Olivia Kubik.
  • With a layup in the lane, Stephanie Ainsworth recorded her 1,000th career point as the Golden Eagles lead 11-4 at the media timeout.
  • A layup from Jaxi Long and Emma Costen continued to help Cornerstone hold onto their first quarter lead 15-10.
  • The Golden Eagles head into the second quarter with a 17-10 lead over the Yellow Jackets.
Second Quarter – Cornerstone – 41 Defiance - 28
  • Jaylee Long drained a three for the Golden Eagles, but Defiance would answer with a 5-0 run to make it 20-15 through the first two-minutes of the second quarter.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to find their offense through Jaxi Long as a steal and layup gave her 11 points as Cornerstone leads 26-19 after four-minutes.
  • It continued to be all Cornerstone in the second quarter as the Golden Eagles have taken advantage of the multiple Yellow Jacket turnovers as Maddie Schuur finalizes a 10-0 run to make it 36-19.
  • A quick 8-2 run by Defiance cut into the Golden Eagle lead 38-27 as one minute remains in the first half.
  • Jaxi Long capitalized a strong first half with a three as Cornerstone heads into halftime with a 41-28 lead.
Third Quarter – Cornerstone – 59 Defiance - 37
  • Cornerstone opened the third quarter on two-minute 6-2 run as they have extended their lead to 47-30.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to lead the Yellow Jackets as a three from Jaxi Long made it 52-33 at the media timeout.
  • Cornerstone sees their largest lead of the game after a Laura Innerebner layup made it 57-37 with a minute left in the third.
  • After a pair of Jaxi Long free throws, the Golden Eagles lead 59-37 after the third quarter.
Fourth Quarter – Cornerstone – 84 Defiance - 49
  • Julie Asbaugh and Jaxi Long started the offense in the fourth quarter with easy layups as they now lead 66-41.
  • Jaxi Long capped off her great day with another easy layup to give her 31 points as she helped the Golden Eagles to a 70-41 advantage with 6:42 left in the fourth quarter.
  • Lily Helmuth got into the action with a basket around the rim as four-minutes remain with Cornerstone ahead of Defiance 74-45.
  • Julie Ashbaugh and Abby Hall found baskets around the rim as Cornerstone leads late 83-49.
  • The Golden Eagles improve to 4-0 in conference with an 84-49 victory over Defiance.
