GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles had their first true road test of the year and came away with a scary five set victory (25-12, 25-23, 16-25, 22-25, 15-11). Cornerstone took care of business early in this match, winning the first two sets easy. Siena Heights turned the tide the next two sets, winning those just as easy as the Golden Eagles first two, but men's volleyball finished the job in the fifth set for the win. Even though they lost their first set of the year, they remain undefeated as they move to 7-0 (3-0) on the season as they welcome Saint Mary of the Woods on Friday, February 23.
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 3 Siena Heights – 2 (25-12, 25-23, 16-25, 22-25, 15-11)
- Set One
- The Golden Eagles opened the first set on a 5-1 run that forced Siena Heights to use one of their timeouts after a service ace from Ernest Broaster.
- Siena Heights responded nicely out of the timeout, going on a 4-1 run of their own to make it a 6-5 match after a service ace of their own.
- Patrick Voloch finds the corner of the court for a kill and Joshua Beaumont follows that up with a service ace to give the Golden Eagles a 11-7 lead.
- Cornerstone has rattled off eight-straight points to take a 19-8 lead over the Saints. Hubert Sliwinski had multiple kills and Patrick Voloch had a service ace.
- Cornerstone wins the first set 25-12 thanks to a block from Joshua Beaumont and Patrick Voloch.
- Set Two
- Cornerstone and Siena Heights opened the second set battling it out as it is tied 4-4 after a David Galanes kill.
- Siena Heights has slowly pulled away from the Golden Eagles, having an 8-5 advantage after an attack error from the Golden Eagles.
- A kill from Ernest Broaster and David Galanes knots this game up 10-10 after a 5-2 run from the Golden Eagles.
- Another quick run from the Golden Eagles has them leading 14-12 after a block from David Galanes and Joshua Beaumont.
- The Golden Eagles continue to pull away from the Saints as a service ace from Patrick Voloch makes it 19-15 late in the second set.
- The Saints used a big 6-2 run to tie the match 21-21 taking advantage of the Golden Eagles mistakes and easy kills.
- Cornerstone shook off the late life from the Saints and won set two 25-23 thanks to a kill from Ernest Broaster and an error from Siena Heights.
- Set Three
- The Saints jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set, taking advantage of Cornerstone's attacking errors.
- It continued to be the Saints in the third set as after a block, they now lead 12-5.
- Cornerstone has a little life as they have slowly chipped away at the Saints lead, making It 13-8 after a Joshua Beaumont kill.
- Siena Heights responded with a 3-0 run that forced the Golden Eagles to take a timeout as they trail 16-8.
- A 5-1 run by the Golden Eagles makes this a new match as they trail by four, 17-13 after a Kyi Jagorin service ace.
- The Golden Eagles continue to struggle attacking in the third set as more errors has the Saints three points away from giving Cornerstone their first set loss of the year.
- Siena Heights gives Cornerstone their first set loss, 25-16.
- Set Four
- Just like the previous set, Cornerstone and Siena Heights traded points back-and-forth as it is tied 4-4.
- A 4-0 run by the Saints sees them take the 8-5 lead.
- Cornerstone has battled back and thanks to a service ace from Ernest Broaster, they take the 13-12 lead.
- A kill from Patrick Voloch puts the Golden Eagles back in the lead 19-18 late in the fourth set.
- After going back-and-forth for a few points, the Saints close the fourth set on a 3-0 run to take the fourth set 25-22.
- Set Five
- Siena Heights opened the fifth set on a 3-1 run thanks to three kills.
- Cornerstone responded with a 5-1 run to take a 6-4 lead over the Saints, thanks to a kill from David Galanes.
- Ernest Broaster gets back-to-back kills for the Golden Eagles as they lead late 11-7.
- Andrew Galanes puts the finishing touches on a road match scare as the Golden Eagles win the fifth set 15-11.
