Women’s Basketball falls just shy in their regular season finale

Fort Wayne, Ind. – Women's Basketball closed out their regular season play today with a battle against the first-place team in the conference. The game started out strong for both teams as there were 11 lead changes in the first half resulting in a 32-32 halftime score. The Warriors found their momentum quickly in the second half and ran away with a 72-57 victory. Olivia Kubik led the way in points for Cornerstone with 13. Mackenzie Goodwin also chipped in 10 points and 6 steals for the Golden Eagles in the game. The ladies will hold their heads high as they prepare to host the first round of the WHAC Tournament on Wednesday, February 26 at 5:30 p.m.  
 
Game Highlights – Cornerstone – 57 #RV Indiana Tech – 72
  • First Quarter
    • The first strike came from the Warriors with a deep three pointer to take the early lead. 
    • Olivia Kubik sliced through the Indiana Tech defense to secure an easy layup for the Golden Eagles, yet they trailed 5-4. 
    • Jaxi Long and Laura Innerebner knocked down two jumpers to keep Cornerstone in the game only down 10-8 at the six-minute mark. 
    • Indiana Tech started the contest 3-3 from deep as they regained the lead at 13-12. 
    • Cornerstone allowed their defense to make an instant impact in this first quarter which the Golden Eagles turned into a 14-13 lead. 
    • Emma Costen found another jumper for the Golden Eagles, but Indiana Tech answered right away with a three-point play at the other end to tie the game at 18-18 with two minutes left in the quarter. 
    • The freshman Julie Ashbaugh came off the bench with a purpose and put together two quick buckets to keep Cornerstone on pace with the Warriors. 
    • The Golden Eagles took the lead late with a strong bucket from Laura Innerebner, but the Warriors responded just before the buzzer with another three-point basket to take a 25-24 lead to end the first quarter.
  • Second Quarter
    • Mackenzie Goodwin started the scoring for the Golden Eagles in the second quarter, but the Warriors led 27-26. 
    • The Golden Eagles continued to find all their scoring through Mackenzie Goodwin as she added two more buckets, yet they trailed by one point at the halfway point of the second quarter. 
    • Cornerstone held their first lead of the second quarter at 32-31 thanks to a strong take to the bucket from Emma Costen
    • The fireworks from the first quarter fizzed out quickly in the second quarter as both defenses stepped up which tied the game at 32-32 at the halftime break.
  • Third Quarter
    • Indiana Tech started the third quarter on 6-2 run with Jaxi Long scoring in that stretch. 
    • Mackenzie Goodwin knocked down another pair of free throws to keep Cornerstone within two points of the Warriors with six minutes left to play in the quarter.
    • Both teams traded baskets as Abi Bandstra scored for Cornerstone with the score at 40-38 in favor of Indiana Tech. 
    • Jaxi Long scored a big layup for the Golden Eagles as they held close to the Warriors at the halfway mark of the third quarter. 
    • The Warriors started a run, but Jaylee Long responded with the Cornerstones first deep ball of the game with Indiana Tech leading 46-43. 
    • Indiana Tech went on an 8-0 to take their largest lead of the game at 54-43 with two minutes left in the third. 
    • Olivia Kubik ended the third quarter with four quick points for Cornerstone as they trailed 56-50. 
  • Fourth Quarter
    • The Warriors came out swinging in the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to take a commanding 64-50 lead. 
    • The Golden Eagles found their first points in the fourth come from a pair of Olivia Kubik free throws. 
    • Indiana Tech continued to add to their advantage as they led 68-52 with two minutes left in the quarter. 
    • Olivia Kubik knocked down another set of free throws, yet the Golden Eagles deficit reached 16 points with only a minute to play. 
    • The Golden Eagles closed out the scoring from Julie Ashbaugh, but it was much too late as they were defeated 72-57. 
By the Numbers 
7.7% – The Golden Eagles shot 7.7% from behind the arc in their loss going 1-12 on the day. 
17 – Cornerstone won the bench battle with 17 points to Indiana Tech's zero. 
11 – The game saw 11 total lead changes all coming from the first half. 
 
What's Next? 
Cornerstone will return home as they host the first round of the WHAC Tournament on Wednesday, February 26 at 5:30 p.m.
