Championship Bound! Women's Basketball upsets one seed Indiana Tech 63-61!

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – For the first time since the 2017-18 season and the first time under coach Jessica Yonkers, women's basketball will play for the WHAC Championship after an upset victory over one seed Indiana Tech 63-61. The Golden Eagles battled from start to finish as their high energy and motivation propelled them to victory. Senior Olivia Kubik did everything tonight as she had a game high 22 points along with 11 rebounds to help the Golden Eagles in the upset win. Women's Basketball will now host the seven seed Lourdes in the WHAC Championship Game on Monday, March 3 starting at 6 p.m. The winner earns a bid into the NAIA National Championship.

Game Recap: Cornerstone – 63 #RV Indiana Tech - 61

First Quarter – Indiana Tech – 15 Cornerstone - 12
  • Olivia Kubik got the offense started for the Golden Eagles with five straight points to give Cornerstone an early 5-2 lead.
  • Indiana Tech used a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead over the Golden Eagles but Jaxi Long would make a three to retake the lead 8-7 three minutes through the first quarter.
  • Jaxi Long drove and finished the layup to tie at 12 as two minutes remain.
  • Indiana Tech would make a three, but both teams were held scoreless the final two minutes of action as the Warriors lead the Golden Eagles 15-12.
Second Quarter – Cornerstone – 33 Indiana Tech - 29
  • Indiana Tech opened the second quarter on an 8-2 run to extend their lead 23-14 over the Golden Eagles through the first two-minutes of action.
  • Olivia Kubik completed the three-point play and Jaylee Long followed with a three for quick Golden Eagle 6-0 run to make it 23-20.
  • The run continued as this time a 10-1 run saw the Golden Eagles take a 30-24 advantage after a Jaylee Long three. It has been a five-minute 16-1 run.
  • Cornerstone used a big second quarter to take a 33-29 lead into halftime as they are halfway to their goal of an upset victory.
Third Quarter – Cornerstone – 45 Indiana Tech - 41
  • Indiana Tech used a layup and pair of free throws to make it a 35-33 game through the first three minutes of the third quarter.
  • Jaxi Long made a lefty layup, and Olivia Kubik would follow that with a banked in three to highlight a Cornerstone 5-0 run to extend their lead 42-35 over Indiana Tech as four minutes remain.
  • The shots continued to fall in Cornerstones favor as Laura Innerebner finished through contact to make it 44-37.
  • The Warriors made a pair of free throws before the end of the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles continue to lead 45-41 as 10 minutes remain.
Fourth Quarter – Cornerstone – 63 Indiana Tech – 61
  • It was back-and-forth to start the fourth as both Cornerstone and Indiana Tech scored at will with the Golden Eagles ahead 49-47.
  • Jaxi Long has continued to stop Indiana Tech's momentum as her jumper made it a two-position game 53-49 with six minutes left.
  • After and Indiana Tech layup, Emma Costen drilled a huge three to make it a five-point game, 56-51 as four minutes remain.
  • The Golden Eagles continued to find baskets when they needed it most as Stephanie Ainsworth made a layup to keep it a five-point game, 60-55 with 1:30 left.
  • Late game free throws became critical for the Golden Eagles as Mackenzie Goodwin would knock a pair down to make it 62-55.
  • Indiana Tech drilled a three and instantly fouled next possession, the Golden Eagles missed both free throws. A foul was called on Cornerstone on the rebound attempt and Indiana Tech would make both to make it 62-60 with 19 seconds left.
  • Mackenzie Goodwin would make one of two free throws to make it 63-60 game as another foul on the Golden Eagles sent Indiana Tech to the line. The Warriors would make one of two to make it 63-61.
  • Off the inbounds, Cornerstone would turn the ball over as Indiana Tech would look for a final shot but a miscue by the Warriors favored Cornerstone as their turnover propelled Cornerstone to a 63-61 upset victory.

13 – Defense matters as the Golden Eagles recorded eight steals and five blocks for 13 total defensive stops
7-26 – Cornerstone held WHAC Player of the Year Taylor Covington to 7-26 from the field for 16 points

Women's Basketball heads to the WHAC Championship game on Monday, March 3 as they are set to host the seven seed Lourdes for a shot a bid into the NAIA National Championship.
