WHAC Tournament Recap
Women's Basketball has made it past the first two rounds of the WHAC Tournament, here's how. The Golden Eagles open WHAC Tournament play as the four seed and hosted the five seed Concordia in the Quarterfinal round. A slow start hurt the Golden Eagles as they found themselves down 34-28 at halftime. After regrouping at halftime, Cornerstone outscored Concordia 23-19 in the third and 30-23 in the fourth to win it 81-76 to advance to the WHAC Semifinal round where one seed Indiana Tech awaited. In the victory over CUAA, four Golden Eagles scored over 15 points with
Stephanie Ainsworth coming back from injury leading the way with 17 points and three blocks.
Women's Basketball would then face off against one seed Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne where they were looking up a steep hill. Besides falling behind by nine early in the second quarter, a strong 16-1 run by the Golden Eagles propelled them ahead of the Warriors where Cornerstone never looked back.
Olivia Kubik did everything in the victory as she scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in women's basketballs second win over Indiana Tech on the year.
That victory over Indiana Tech moved women's basketball to the Championship game for the first time since the 2017-18 season where they won the Championship as a six seed.
What's at Stake
Cornerstone and Lourdes will be battling for an automatic bid into the NAIA National Championship with a win on Monday night, as well as bragging rights as the WHAC Tournament Champions. This is a true win or go home situation for both teams as neither of them would earn an at large bid in Nationals. Look for there to be fireworks with both teams laying it on the line!
Scouting Lourdes
Lourdes comes into the Championship game against the Golden Eagles with an overall record of 21-10 on the year. Despite a very successful record, the Gray Wolves struggled in conference to a 12-8 record where they became the seven seed. Despite the odds, Lourdes won the play in over Madonna 65-56, the Quarterfinal round over Aquinas 62-61, and Semifinal round over UNOH 79-74. The Gray Wolves have gotten hot at just the right moment as they will look to repeat their early season success against Cornerstone (Lourdes def. Cornerstone 82-62 in Sylvania, Ohio on January 4) Monday night.
Even though the Golden Eagles and Gray Wolves matched up once on the year, and only at Lourdes, Cornerstone has the home court advantage and will look to use that on Monday where they have protected home turf to a 9-5 record. Lourdes is led by Emma Pedroza and her 18 points and 6.5 rebounds per-game with forward Macie Stringfellow right behind her at 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per-game. Pedroza has averaged 20.3 points and Stringfellow has averaged 20.6 points per-game during the WHAC Tournament.
