GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Softball was right back in action with a doubleheader against Aquinas and came away with a split. Cornerstone scored early in game one behind
Moriah Sprague's homerun on their way to an 11-2 victory. In game two, Aquinas used a big six-run second inning and never looked back on their way to an 8-3 victory. Softball moves to 17-9 (3-3) on the year as they will hit the road to take on Siena Heights on Wednesday, April 2 starting at 3:30 p.m.
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 10 Aquinas - 2
- Three batters into the game, the Golden Eagles grabbed an early lead thanks to a two-run homerun off the bat of Moriah Sprague. Later in the inning, Dylan Holmes would hit a double off the wall to help Cornerstone extend their lead 4-0 after the first inning.
- For the second straight inning, Moriah Sprague came through as her sac fly extended Cornerstones lead 5-0 over Aquinas after the second inning.
- McKenna Gilde has continued to shut down the bats of the Saints through the first three innings, keeping the Golden Eagles ahead 5-0.
- Maddy Chatman led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and would later score on an Anna Griffioen sac fly to make it 6-0.
- The Saints would load the bases in the fifth inning and with two outs, they would come through with a two-run single to make it a 6-2 game as Gilde worked out of the bases loaded jam.
- Cornerstone would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning, looking to add onto their lead late in the game. Free passes by the Saints saw the Golden Eagles make it 9-2. Alexis Ashbay ended the game with an RBI single to run rule Aquinas 10-2 in game one.
Game Two Recap: Aquinas – 8 Cornerstone - 3
- After a quick first inning, the Saints got on the board first in the second with a solo homerun to take a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles. Cornerstones defense has struggled in the bottom of the second as two errors helped the Saints take a 3-0 advantage. The inning continued for Aquinas as they brought home three more to make it 6-0 over Cornerstone.
- Nothing much going for the Golden Eagle bats as they have been held scoreless through three innings as Aquinas continued to lead 6-0.
- Back-to-back doubles from Taylor Zwagerman and Alexis Ashbay helped Cornerstone get on the board in the bottom of the fourth as they still trail 6-1. The Golden Eagles would add one more on a Maddy Chatman sac fly to make it 6-2 as the game heads into the fifth.
- Cornerstone would tack on one run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an Aquinas fielding error as the Golden Eagles trail 6-3 as it heads into the final inning.
- A Cornerstone error comes back to bite them as the Saints would score two insurance runs to extend their lead 8-3 as the Golden Eagles have one last chance in the bottom of the inning.
- Taylor Zwagerman hit a two out double in the bottom of the seventh but was stranded there as the Golden Eagles fall in game two 8-3.
