Men's Volleyball unable to finish down the stretch in a 3-1 loss to Lourdes

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Men's Volleyball faced off against Lourdes in the WHAC Semifinal round and it was played like it was a championship game in a tough 3-1 loss. Cornerstone had every opportunity to win this match as they carried late leads in every set tonight, but eventually falling in three of the four sets as Lourdes found a way to win down the stretch. Ernest Broaster led the way for the Golden Eagles with 23 total points and Kyi Jagorin collected 19 digs in the defeat. Men's Volleyball will now wait and see if they earned an at-large bid in the NAIA National Tournament as the selection show takes place on April 22.
 
Game Recap – #RV Lourdes – 3 #12 Cornerstone – 1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22)
 
First Set: Lourdes – 25 Cornerstone - 23
  • Cornerstone and Lourdes has opened in a tight contest as errors from both sides sees the game tied at three early in the first set.
  • Lourdes has found the first momentum of the game as they took a 7-5 lead over Cornerstone thanks to a kill and service ace.
  • Ernest Broaster has found some early momentum in the first set as back-to-back kills from him made it 10-9 as Lourdes continued to lead.
  • A big block from David Galanes and Hubert Sliwinski knotted the game at 11 but another service error from the Golden Eagles helped Lourdes take a 12-11 advantage.
  • Lourdes was forced to use their first timeout of the set as a 5-2 run by the Golden Eagles saw them take a 16-13 advantage after another Gray Wolves error.
  • Andrew Galanes and Brunno Peres put an end to a small Lourdes run as their kills made it 19-16 late in the first set.
  • Service errors have continued to hurt the Golden Eagles as one led to a 3-0 Lourdes run to tie the set at 20 as Cornerstone called a timeout to regroup.
  • Cornerstone called their final timeout of the first set as back-to-back Lourdes kills has made it 23-22 late.
  • One final middle set kill from Lourdes saw the Golden Eagles fall in set one 25-23.
 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 26 Lourdes - 24
  • Cornerstone jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead over Lourdes thanks to big swing from David Galanes.
  • A Lourdes attack error helped Cornerstone extend their lead 8-4 early in the first set.
  • Multiple Golden Eagle errors have led to Lourdes taking a 10-9 advantage over Cornerstone.
  • Cornerstone has flipped the momentum back to their side as a quick 3-0 run saw them take a 16-14 lead after a big block at the net.
  • An Ernest Broaster kill put Cornerstone up 19-17, but Lourdes would rattle off three straight points to take a 20-19 lead as the Golden Eagles called a timeout.
  • Cornerstone took a 22-20 lead right out of the timeout thanks to an ace from Ernest Broaster and a solo block from Joshua Beaumont as Lourdes would call a timeout of their own.
  • A kill from Ernest Broaster made it 24-23 Cornerstone as Lourdes would call a timeout to regroup. Right out of the timeout, the Gray Wolves found a kill to tie it at 24.
  • A Lourdes service error was followed a David Galanes kill to help Cornerstone take set two 26-24.
 
Third Set: Lourdes – 25 Cornerstone - 23
  • Ernest Broaster helped the Golden Eagles take an early 3-2 in the third set.
  • Back-to-back blocks at the net from Lourdes saw them grow their lead over Cornerstone 6-3.
  • The Golden Eagles fought right back after a slow start to the third set as kills from Ernest Broaster and Andrew Galanes tied it at eight.
  • Back-to-back David Galanes kills saw Cornerstone make it a 13-11 game as it continued to be played close.
  • After tying it at 15, Lourdes saw back-to-back errors help Cornerstone make it 17-15 as the Gray Wolves called their first timeout of the set.
  • Lourdes won't back down as another block on the net from the Gray Wolves made it 19-18 game in favor of Cornerstone.
  • Cornerstone silenced Lourdes with a 3-0 run to make it 22-18 late in the third set.
  • Lourdes would respond quickly with a 3-0 run of their own thanks to a couple service aces made it 22-21 as Cornerstone would call a timeout to regroup.
  • The run continued for Lourdes as back-to-back aces made it 23-22 as Cornerstone called their final timeout of the third set.
  • One more service ace from Lourdes made it 24-22 before a kill from Ernest Broaster made it 24-23.
  • Lourdes used a kill off the block to complete the comeback and win the third set 25-23.
 
Fourth Set: Lourdes – 25 Cornerstone – 22
  • Cornerstone has jumped out to a 3-1 lead to open the fourth set after kills from Andrew Galanes and David Galanes.
  • Lourdes was forced to call their first timeout of the set as a 5-0 Golden Eagle run saw them extend their lead 8-3.
  • The run continued for the Golden Eagles as they now lead 10-3 after back-to-back blocks from Ernest Broaster and Joshua Beaumont.
  • The momentum has suddenly flipped in favor of Lourdes as an 8-0 run saw them take an 11-10 lead over Cornerstone as the Golden Eagles were forced to call their first timeout.
  • It has continued to favor Lourdes as the run continued as it is now 16-10 as the Golden Eagles have struggled to find a point.
  • Lourdes is the first to 20 as a Golden Eagle service error made it a 20-15 game.
  • Cornerstone wouldn't back down as a 4-1 run made it 21-19 late after a kill from Ernest Broaster.
  • Lourdes squeaked one last kill in to take the fourth set and upset Cornerstone 25-22 in the final set.

What's Next?
Men's Volleyball will wait and see if they earned an NAIA at-large bid into nationals on April 22.
