Softball Goes 1-1 in their Season Opener

Rosemont, Ill. – Softball opened their season on Thursday, February 12th going 1-1 on the day. After being held to only two runs in the first game, the offense exploded in the second game scoring four runs in the first inning and getting their first win of 2026 defeating William Penn 7-5. Rylee Stephenson led the Golden Eagles with two RBIs on the day while hitting two doubles.  
 
 
Game One Recap: Cornerstone – 2 St. Francis (Ill.) – 4
  • St. Francis got out to an early over CU as hit batter and wild pitch, followed by an error led to the Fighting Saints taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
  • Cornerstone and St. Francis held each other to one hit each over the next two frames with Paige Liddell getting the first base hit of the season for the Golden Eagles.
  • The 4th inning saw some more action as the Fighting Saints got two runners on but couldn't get them around. Alexis Ashbay tripled and scored on a ground out by Kaylee Misialek to tie the game.
  • Things ramped up in the 5th inning as the St. Francis scored three runs with two outs to take a 4-1 lead over CU. Cornerstone got two hits in the bottom half of the inning but couldn't capitalize.
  • After a quiet sixth inning and top of the seventh, CU started their comeback effort with a pinch hot single from Rylee Stephenson. Paige Liddell followed that up with a single to right moving Stephenson to third.
  • Anna Griffioen reached on a fielder's choice which brought Rylee Stephenson in to score, but a strike out followed to end the game with Cornerstone dropping their season opener 4-2.
Game Two Recap: Cornerstone – 7 William Penn (Iowa) – 5
  • Cornerstone came out of the gates strong in their second game of the day, erupting for four runs in the first inning. Three straight singles from Morgan Jenkins, Anna Griffioen and Sam Timmer with Timmer's bringing Jenkins in to score. 
  • Anna Griffioen scored on a wild pitch, Alexis Ashbay reached on a walk and stole second which was then followed by a two rbi double to left center by Rylee Stephenson to give CU a 4-0 lead.
  • William Penn answered back in the bottom half of the first scoring three runs on two hits and two errors by the Golden Eagles. 
  • CU added two in the third as Sam Timmer and Dylan Holmes reached on back-to-back singles to open the frame. Alexis Ashbay reached on a fielder's choice with Kaityln Cain replacing her as a pinch runner. Sam Timmer scored on error by the William Penn catcher and Kaitlyn Cain scored on a passed ball after being advanced to third on a ground out.
  • The Statesman answered back in the third and fourth innings with a run each to make it a 6-5 game in favor of CU.
  • After an uneventful fifth inning Cornerstone extending their lead to 7-5 as Rylee Stephenson started the sixth inning with a double followed by a walk from Adriana Sackett and a single from Maddi Veersma. Morgan Jenkins hit a sac fly to right to which brought Sackett in to score.
By the Numbers:
3 – Sam Timmer and Rylee Stephenson both totaled three hits on the day
2/2 – Rylee Stephenson led CU with two doubles and two RBIs
10 – Cornerstone pitchers combined for ten strikeouts over both games. 

What's Next?
The Golden Eagles continue tournament play on Friday, February 13th with games against Olivet Nazarene at 11 a.m. and William Penn at 3:30 p.m.
