Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Volleyball came into the matchup against Rochester Christian with fresh momentum after knocking off #7 Lawrence Tech in their previous match. It was all business from the very beginning as the Golden Eagles ran away with a 3-0 sweep victory over the Warriors. Men's Volleyball will be in action next on Tuesday, February 10
th as they travel to hometown rival Aquinas for a 7:00 p.m. start.
Game Recap – #RV Cornerstone – 3 Rochester Christian – 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-8)
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 16
- The first set started hot for the home team with Kyle Kuebler coming out with big swings giving Cornerstone an early 4-2 lead.
- Kyle Hortness continued the strong start for the Golden Eagles with back-to-back aces to keep the momentum.
- The Golden Eagles block party led by Ethan Walker gave them a 15-6 advantage as they held full control of the first set.
- The service aces could not be stopped with Ryder Roberts adding a pair of his own to give Cornerstone a 19-9 lead.
- Matthew True and JeQuarri Shannon put the seal on the first set win after a massive leap at the net to send the attack to the floor.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 15
- Set number two started fast for the Golden Eagles with Braeden Schripsema and Ryder Roberts both finding kills to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
- The Warriors stormed back quick as they found their first lead of the match after a five-point run to lead 5-3.
- Back and forth points continued until Cornerstone separated the set taking a 12-8 lead.
- Two more big time swings from Matthew True and JeQuarri Shannon extended the Golden Eagles lead to 16-11.
- The Golden Eagles closed out set two 25-15 on a six-point run led by Andrew Galanes setting up four crucial kills in that run.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 25 Rochester Christian – 8
- Kyle Kuebler kick started the third set for the Golden Eagles with back-to-back kills and a block to jump out to an early lead.
- The errors began to pile up in the match as Cornerstone took a 9-4 lead looking to sweep the warriors in this third set.
- Matthew True continued to shine serving and swinging for the Golden Eagles as he boosted them into a 12-4 lead.
- The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 17-5 lead thanks to an impressive block by Braeden Schripsema as they inched closer to ending this match.
- Connor Burke triple ace finish to the match ends the hope for the Warriors and gives Cornerstone an impressive sweep victory against Rochester Christian.
