Men's Volleyball Loses Heartbreaker to Lawrence Tech

Southfield, Mich. – Men's Volleyball lost to Lawrence Tech in a five-set heartbreaker. Andrew Galanes led CU with 18 kills while tallying 20 assists and Kyle Hortness led in both assists with 26 and service aces with three. The Golden Eagles close out the regular season against Bethel on Tuesday, April 7th at 7 p.m.

Game Recap – Cornerstone – 2 Lawrence Tech – 3 (20-25, 31-29, 16-25, 27-25, 11-15)
 
First Set: Cornerstone – 20 Lawrence Tech – 25
  • The match began as a back-and-forth battle as multiple kills by Andrew Galanes kept CU within one as LTU led 6-5.
  • Lawrence Tech went on a run off of three errors by CU to grow their lead to 10-5.
  • Cornerstone got back within two as back-to-back kills by Matthew True made it a 12-10 game in set one.
  • The Blue Devils extended their lead once again as they took a seven-point lead, but CU responded with three-straight points with kills from Andrew Galanes and Ethan Walker.
  • The Golden Eagles got back within two as back-to-back attack errors by LTU and a service ace by Jakob Nebo made it a 21-19 game in favor of the Blue Devils.
  • Lawrence Tech secured the set one victory 25-20 over CU.
Second Set: Cornerstone – 31 Lawrence Tech – 29
  • The second set started with LTU getting out to a 6-2 lead.
  • Cornerstone fought back to get within once off two kills by Andrew Galanes and one from Ryder Roberts.
  • CU took their first lead on a service ace by Mitchell Carrera and another kill from Andrew Galanes helped CU maintain a 17-15 lead.
  • The Blue Devils retook the lead as they made it 22-20 in set two.
  • Matthew True led CU back with a kill and an ace to make it a 25-24 game.
  • After a continued back-and-forth battle, a kill from Matthew True paired with a block by Andrew Galanes and JeQuarri Shannon gave Cornerstone the set two win 31-29.
Third Set: Cornerstone – 16 Lawrence Tech – 25
  • The third set saw another back-and-forth battle to begin the set, but LTU would get the advantage taking an 8-6 lead.
  • CU cut into the Blue Devils lead with a kill from Ethan Walker and a service ace by Patrick Burke to make it a 14-10 set in favor of LTU.
  • Lawrence Tech continued to grow their lead as they went on a run to take a 20-13 lead.
  • Cornerstone added three more points with kills from JeQuarri Shannon and Ryder Roberts, but LTU secured the set three win 25-16.
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 27 Lawrence Tech – 25
  • The fourth set started differently as Cornerstone got out to an early 8-5 lead with two kills by Matthew True and back-to-back service aces by Kyle Hortness.
  • LTU stayed within three, but multiple errors kept Cornerstone ahead.
  • Despite multiple kills from Matthew True, Lawrence Tech got within one to make it a 17-16 game in favor of CU.
  • The Blue Devils took the lead going up 22-21 but was tied up again on a service error.
  • Two straight errors by LTU capped off by a service ace from Matthew True gave Cornerstone the set four win 27-25 to send the match to the fifth set.
Fifth Set: Cornerstone – 11 Lawrence Tech – 15
  • Lawrence Tech came out strong in the fifth set taking a quick 4-0 lead. 
  • CU responded with two kills by Matthew True to get within two.
  • The Golden Eagles stayed within two getting points off three errors by the Blue Devils to make it a 10-8 set in favor of LTU.
  • Despite Cornerstone getting more points off errors, Lawrence took set five 15-11 and secured the match win.
 
By The Numbers:
18/20 – Andrew Galanes led CU with 18 kills while also tallying 20 assists.
26/3– Kyle Hortness led the Golden Eagles with 26 assists and three service aces.
