Men’s Volleyball Ends on the Wrong Side of Five-Set Thriller Against Goshen

Grand Rapids, Mich. – Men's Volleyball went back to work inside Mol Arena as they hosted the Goshen Maple Leaf's. This one turned into a thriller as the match took all five sets to declare Goshen as victors. Ryder Roberts led the match in kills with 14 as the Golden Eagles ended up just shy. The Golden Eagles next test comes at home against rival Aquinas on Tuesday, March 17th for a 7:00 p.m. start. 
 
Game Recap – Cornerstone – 2 Goshen – 3 (25-14, 20-25, 22-25, 25-17, 5-15)

 
First Set: Cornerstone – 25 Goshen – 14
  • The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead early thanks to some strong assists from Andrew Galanes finished off well by the squad. 
  • Cornerstone continued to dominate the match and take advantage of Goshen's mistakes leading 16-10. 
  • JeQuarri Shannon sparked the Cornerstone offense with back-to-back swings to keep the momentum rolling for the home team. 
  • Matthew True and Ethan Walker closed out the first set with some strong attacks to secure a 25-14 first set win. 
Second Set: Cornerstone – 20 Goshen – 25
  • Goshen looked to gain from the 2nd set pep talk as they stepped up quickly taking a 4-1 advantage to start the set. 
  • The Golden Eagles continued to struggle attacking in the start of the second set with attacking errors beginning to pile up. 
  • Ryder Roberts secured a smooth swing and kill but Cornerstone still trailed 12-7 in the set looking to find a way back in. 
  • The Golden Eagles saw Ethan Walker turn back-to-back swings into a 14-10 deficit as they continued to fight in the set. 
  • Goshen was forced into their first timeout of the set as they saw their lead shrink to only one point with mental mistakes telling the story. 
  • The Maple Leaf's took advantage of the timeout and used it to their advantage as they snatched the second set 25-20. 
Third Set: Cornerstone – 22 Goshen – 25
  • Cornerstone found themselves behind the mark once again starting the third set as they trailed 7-3. 
  • Goshen found themselves holding onto the narrow lead as JeQuarri Shannon kept Cornerstone in the game with strong swings. 
  • The Golden Eagles continued to rely on the front line as they forced Goshen into the first timeout of the set with it tied at 15-15 in a pivotal third set. 
  • The Maple Leaf's used another timeout well as they capitalized on six consecutive points to take a 21-15 lead forcing Cornerstone to think things over in a timeout of their own.
  • The fight continued in this third set as Cornerstone went on a five-point run to answer Goshen only trailing by one point. 
  • Cornerstone suffered back-to-back attacking errors and strong swings from the Goshen side to drop the set and face a 2-1 match deficit. 
Fourth Set: Cornerstone – 25 Goshen – 17
  • The Golden Eagles started the fourth set on the best run of the night with a 7-4 lead thanks to strong defensive play led by Andrew Galanes
  • Ethan Walker and Andrew Galanes combined for big time blocks in the fourth set to keep Cornerstone in front leading 11-7. 
  • Matthew True and Ryder Roberts found massive swings take CU into a five-point lead in the match forcing a Maple Leaf's timeout. 
  • The Golden Eagles saw their lead swell to nine points late in the set with the game flipping in the home team's favor. 
  • Josiah Reif got in on the action as he added to the CU lead now at 19-10. 
  • The Golden Eagles saw Andrew Galanes close out the fourth set to force the game into a fifth set to decide the match. 
Fifth Set: Cornerstone – 5 Goshen – 15
  • The Golden Eagles struggled opening the final set of the contest as they called a timeout down 5-1. 
  • JeQuarri Shannon and Ethan Walker found two swings hit the floor but still Cornerstone trailed 8-4 in the final set as the team's switched sides. 
  • The Golden Eagles momentum fell apart late as they dropped the match after suffering a 15-5 final set loss. 
By The Numbers: 
14/3 – Cornerstone saw JeQuarri Shannon lead the match with 12 kills and three blocks in the contest. 
20/12 – Andrew Galanes posted 20 assists in the game as well as securing 12 kills.

Men's Volleyball looks forward to their next matchup as they host Aquinas inside Mol Arena on Tuesday, March 17th at 7:00 p.m.
