Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Heading into the final five minutes of the match it looked as if the men's soccer team would knock off one of the conference's title contenders but a late goal by Marygrove and then one in the last two minutes of overtime sent CU to a 2-1 defeat. The loss marked the fourth one of the year in extra time for the Golden Eagles as they fall to 4-11-1. CU will host Cleary University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
With one week left to play in league matches, the men's soccer team continues to fight for a playoff spot and for 85 minutes on Saturday night, looked as if they would collect three big points. After a scoreless first half that saw CU outshoot the Mustangs 4-2 (2-0 on goal), the Golden Eagles broke through with a 59' tally from Josh Binnendyke (SO/Muskegon, Mich.).
The defender headed in a cross off a corner from Tristan Esprit (SR/Toronto, Ontario) to put the home team up 1-0.
Playing mostly defense for the remainder of regulation, the CU defense held tough and keeper Nick Hopkins (SO/Ada, Mich.) made some great saves to preserve the 1-0 lead.
With just under six minutes to play however, a through ball and the Mustangs speed allowed the visitors to tie up the score and send the match into overtime. In their sixth extra time match of the season, CU was again on the short end as the Mustangs converted a goal at 108:21 to take home the 2-1 win.
Cornerstone falls to 4-11-1 on the season and 2-5-1 in league play as they now will host Cleary University on Wednesday in a non-conference tilt. CU will conclude the regular season next Saturday when they host Indiana Tech on senior day at 7 p.m.
