GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Looking to pull an upset against cross-town foe Davenport, the Cornerstone Volleyball team was unable to close out sets in a 3-0 loss to the Panthers on Wednesday night. The setback drops the Golden Eagles to 23-9 on the season and 10-7 in league play as they now head to Lourdes on Saturday for the second of three WHAC Crossovers where they will meet the host Gray Wolves and UM-Dearborn.
Tied in each of the three sets in the low-20's was not enough for the Golden Eagles to post a win over the top team in the conference on Wednesday as CU pulled away in each for the 27-25, 25-22, 25-22 win.
Chelsea Lake (JR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) and Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) each finished with a team high 12 kills while Amber Carmean (JR/Fruitport, Mich.) was tops with 16 digs and Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.) with 33 assists.
After trailing 22-19 in the opening set, CU used three straight points to knot the score and force DU into a timeout. From there however, the teams traded points until the Panthers put up two straight to win 27-25. Set two saw the two Beltline rivals tied up at 20 but DU won five of the next seven to win 25-22 and then they closed out the Golden Eagles with the same score in the third after CU led for a majority of the set.
Cornerstone hit just .146 on the night as they finished with 19 hitting errors while the Panthers, ranked No. 15 in the country, finished at .217. Each team finished with six blocks as CU's Cailie Schultz (SR/Rockford, Mich.) had four block assists.
Cornerstone will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Lourdes for a crossover match against the host Gray Wolves as well as UM-Dearborn. Match times are set for 10 a.m and Noon.
