GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The men's soccer team entered Saturday night needing a win to keep their season alive and Garrett Nimmo (SO/Livonia, Mich.)'s goal just 1:04 into overtime did just that as the Golden Eagles defeated Indiana Tech 1-0. Cornerstone improves to 6-11-1 and 3-6-1 in league play to finish in a tie for 8th. CU owns the tie-breaker over UM-Dearborn and will begin the conference tourney next Saturday at No. 1 seed Northwestern Ohio.
Sophomore Garrett Nimmo made sure that the last appearance for the seniors on the CU Soccer Pitch would be a memorable one as he put away the game winner in the 92' to propel the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 win over Indiana Tech. The victory sends the team into the WHAC Tournament on a 2-match winning streak which is the longest current streak in the conference.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, Cornerstone entered their seventh overtime match of the season and wasted no time in gaining possession. After a long battle in the corner, Kevin Nimmo came out with it and sent a ball across the box where Gareth Flynn (SO/Elk Grove, Ill.) one-timed it back into the middle to the head of Garrett Nimmo who put it by the Tech keeper in the upper-left corner.
The goal was Nimmo's second goal of the season to move him into third on the season scoring list for head coach Mark Bell.
The Golden Eagles needed a win to keep their post-season hopes alive after UM-Dearborn defeated Concordia to put them at 10 points for the standings. The three points earned by CU tied them with the Wolverines, but Cornerstone holds the tie-breaker to make the tournament as the No. 8 seed.
Cornerstone and UNOH will meet Saturday in the quarterfinals of the WHAC Tournament.
