Volleyball splits at WHAC Crossover in Ohio

SYLVANIA, Ohio – The volleyball team enters the final week of competition with only league dates on the schedule and they got it started with a split at the WHAC Crossover being hosted by Lourdes on Saturday. CU fell to the host Gray Wolves in the morning match 3-0 before rebounding with a sweep of UM-Dearborn. The 1-1 day leave Cornerstone with an overall record of 24-10 while they are 11-8 in the WHAC.



Match 1 – Lourdes 3, Cornerstone – (28-26, 25-18, 25-13)

The opening match of the day saw the Golden Eagles start fast but fade in the end of the opening set and it carried over to a 3-0 loss to Lourdes. CU held a lead the entire opening set but after leading 24-22, a missed serve and two serve receive errors proved costly as they fell 28-26. That carried into the next two sets as they fell 25-18, 25-13.

Leading the way for Cornerstone was Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) with 11 kills while Chelsea Lake (JR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) had eight and Cailie Schultz (SR/Rockford, Mich.) seven. Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.) finished with 26 assists while Newhouse was tops with 16 digs.

Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, UM-Dearborn 0 (25-15, 25-14, 25-16)

In the second match, Cornerstone got back to their winning ways with a sweep of the Wolverines. CU was never really threatened as they completed the season sweep of Dearborn as they were paced by eight kills from Megan Newhouse and seven from Chelsea Lake.

CU hit .277 for the match while limiting the Wolverines to a -.037

Cornerstone will have one more dual match remaining in the regular season when they travel to Lima, Ohio on Wednesday to face Northwestern Ohio. The Racers won the first meeting in four sets.
