LIMA Ohio – With just three matches remaining in the regular season, the Cornerstone Volleyball team continues to jockey for positioning in the upcoming WHAC Tournament. Head coach Ryan Campbell and his team made a big statement today by taking down the Racers of Northwestern Ohio in five sets on the road. The victory lifts CU to 25-10 on the year and 12-8 in league play. CU wraps up play Saturday when they host Indiana Tech and Concordia.

The CU Volleyball team has had an up and down ride over the past few weeks but Wednesday night was definitely one of the ups as they took down Northwestern Ohio on their home floor 25-19, 29-27, 23-25, 23-25, 15-13 to maintain a fifth place position in the conference standings.

Cornerstone had fallen to the Racers in four sets just a few weeks back but this time jumped out to a 2-0 lead thanks to a solid finish to the second set in which they won by the slimmest of margins. CU hit .381 in the opener and .208 in the second to take control but then it flip-flopped in the next two seeing the Racers win both sets three and four 25-23.

Leading 9-5 in the fifth set, CU looked to have gotten the momentum back but then UNOH scored eight of the next 11 points to lead 13-11. Two attack errors from the Racers and two kills from junior Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) completed the Cornerstone comeback as they posted the 3-2 win.

Heather Green (FR/Anchorage, Alaska), Chelsea Lake (JR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) and Megan Newhouse all finished with 17 kills for CU as Green posted a .424 hitting percentage while playing on the right-side. Abby Carlson (FR/Rockford, Mich.) led the team with 38 assists while Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.) finished with 33. Defensively, CU got 27 digs from Amber Carmean (JR/Fruitport, Mich.), 25 from Lake and 20 from Newhouse.

CU will conclude the regular season on Saturday when they host the last of three WHAC Crossovers. The Golden Eagles will play Indiana Tech at 10 a.m. followed by Concordia at 4:30 p.m.
