GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In the final of three WHAC Crossovers, the Cornerstone Volleyball team picked up a pair of wins over Indiana Tech and Concordia all while celebrating the final home matches for its two seniors Libby Webber (SR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Cailie Schultz (SR/Rockford, Mich.). The two victories lift the Golden Eagles to 27-10 on the year as they secured the fifth seed in the upcoming WHAC Tournament to be played at Davenport next weekend.
Match 1 – Cornerstone 3, Indiana Tech 1 – (25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21)
The opening match of the day saw the Golden Eagles start fast and then hang on against a scrappy Indiana Tech squad who like CU was fighting for positioning in the WHAC Tournament. CU easily took the first two sets 25-18, 25-14 but saw the Warriors rally back in the third with a 25-23 victory to force the forth but it was all Cornerstone in the final set before a late push by IT to make the final score 25-21.
CU hit just .155 in the match but limited the Warriors to a dismal .011 while forcing them into 47 attack errors in the four sets. Megan Newhouse (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) and Ellie Van Laar (FR/Hudsonville, Mich.) each finished with 10 kills while Abby Carlson (FR/Rockford, Mich.) had 24 assists and Hope Leppink (FR/Holland, Mich.) 15 which pushed the freshman over 1,000 for the season.
Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, Concordia 0 (25-11, 25-9, 25-16)
In the second match, Cornerstone spent the first few minutes of the pre-match ceremonies recognizing their pair of seniors Libby Webber and Cailie Schultz and then saw Schultz do work in the 3-set win over Concordia. The reigning Third-Team NAIA All-American finished with a team and match high 15 kills while hitting at an .824 clip.
Megan Newhouse posted 11 kills while Abby Carlson was tops with 13 digs and 23 assists.
CU hit .405 for the match while limiting the Cardinals to a -.065
Cornerstone will now prepare of the WHAC Tournament from November 14-15 at regular season champion Davenport University. CU, which earned the #5 seed will face the #4 seed Aquinas College Saints on Friday. The time has not been set.
