SYLVANIA, Ohio – The first 30 minutes of the game looked bleak for the No. 9 ranked Golden Eagles but they found their offensive rhythm and came away with a …victory over Lourdes University. The win keeps Cornerstone in the hunt for the regular season conference title as they are now 18-5 overall and 12-3 in league play. CU will come back to Mol Arena on Saturday to host No. 17 Northwestern Ohio.
Game Flow
Cornerstone jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead but the next 12-15 minutes was all Lourdes as they did not allow the Golden Eagles to record a field goal from the 14:23 mark until a layup from Kyle Steigenga (FR/Holland, Mich.) with 6:26 to play in the opening half. That bucket ended a 13-2 run for LU but the Golden Eagles were only able to get within seven at the break, trailing 32-25.
A three pointer by Ben Lanning (JR/Grandville, Mich.) opened the scoring in the second half but CU again struggled to get any offensive rhythm until they got to within five with just under 13 minutes to play on consecutive buckets from Travis Wells (JR/Eaton Rapids, Mich.). After a Joey Blauwkamp (SO/Grandville, Mich.) put-back tied the score at 44-44, CU then scored four straight after a LU three-pointer to take their first lead since 10-9 in the opening 10 minutes. The lead would change hands twice more but the latter was a CU spurt that put the visitors up for good as they scored seven straight points in route to the 10-point win.
Say What?
"We weren't our best tonight but its nights like tonight that show what teams are made of. We gutted it out and found a way to win. I'm proud of our guys and happy I could contribute." Junior Travis Wells
