Volleyball takes down pair of Crossroads League foes

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Day one of the Aquinas/Cornerstone crossover featured a pair of Crossroads League opponents for the Golden Eagles and they finished the night with two sweeps. CU defeated Spring Arbor 25-12, 25-8, 25-18 before downing Saint Francis (Ind.) 25-12, 25-12, 25-17. Cornerstone will host Rochester and Point Park on Saturday.



Match 1 - Cornerstone 3, Spring Arbor 0 – 25-12, 25-8, 25-18

Cornerstone connected on their second highest hitting percentage of the season as they downed the Cougars of Spring Arbor in straight sets. CU jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set and never looked back winning the first two by allowing a combined 20 points. 

SAU started strong in the third but the Golden Eagles slowly pulled away for the 25-18 win. Megan Newhouse (SR/Grand Haven, Mich.) posted 16 kills to lead a strong attack for CU as Chelsea Lake (SR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) and Kendra Zwart (FR/Jenison, Mich.) finished with 13 kills each. CU hit at a .419 clip while holding SAU to .048.


Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, Saint Francis (Ind.) – 25-12, 25-12, 25-17

Cornerstone finished off a Friday sweep with a convincing win over the Cougars of Saint Francis as they posted identical 25-12 wins in the first two sets and then walked away after a 25-17 victory in the third.

Megan Newhouse finished off a 30-kill day with 14 more in the 3-set win and she was joined in double-figure kills by Chelsea Lake who had 10. Hope Leppink (SO/Holland, Mich.) handed out 31 assists while Amber Carmean (SR/Fruitport, Mich.) and Chelsea Lake each had 18 digs.


Notes…
-    Kendra Zwart had a career high 13 kills in the opening match win over Spring Arbor
-    Cornerstone, Aquinas and Siena Heights finished the day 2-0 with CU and SHU winning all six sets
-    The Golden Eagles will face a new opponent on Saturday when they take on Point Park (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
