LIMA, OHIO – The Golden Eagles made another trip to Northwestern Ohio of the season for the second of three WHAC Crossovers and came away with a 1-1 day. The Golden Eagles fell to No. 18 Lourdes 3-1 in the opener before taking care of UM-Dearborn in straight sets. The split leaves Cornerstone at 23-10 on the year and 12-7 in the WHAC. CU will host Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday for senior day.
Match 1 - #18 Lourdes 3, Cornerstone 1 – 25-23, 16-25, 11-25, 20-25
Cornerstone was looking to deal the Gray Wolves their first loss of the season but after winning 25-23 in the opener, the Golden Eagles fell victim to a strong offensive attack by LU.
No player for Cornerstone found double-figures for kills as Johanna Egerer (SR/Plymouth, Wisc.), Chelsea Lake (SR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) and Megan Newhouse (SR/Grand Haven, Mich.) all recorded seven kills. Hope Leppink (SO/Holland, Mich.) dished out 23 assists while Lake had a team-best 16 digs.
Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, UM-Dearborn 0 – 25-17, 25-3, 25-14
The Golden Eagles finished off their second match of the day with a convincing 3-0 sweep of the Wolverines. After winning set one 25-17, Chelsea Lake opened the second set by serving 18 straight points to lead CU to the 25-3 win. The Golden Eagles wrapped it up with a 25-14 win in the third.
Megan Newhouse had 11 kills and Hope Leppink 28 assists but the story was 11 service aces for CU as Amber Carmean (SR/Fruitport, Mich.) had five and Chelsea Lake three.
