FORT WAYNE, Ind. – An early three pointer, followed by a slam dunk gave Ben Lanning (SR/Grandville, Mich.) the five points he needed to get to career point No. 1,000 as the senior led No. 1 Cornerstone to a 61-50 road win at No. 4 Saint Francis (Ind.). Lanning poured in 17 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to help CU up their record to 2-1 as they stay in Fort Wayne for a non-conference tilt against Huntington on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Game Flow
The tough early season schedule continued for the No. 1 ranked Golden Eagles as they faced off against No. 4 Saint Francis (Ind.) and it was the Cougars who had the upper hand early as they jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. After four straight from Kyle Steigenga (SO/Holland, Mich.), Cornerstone continued its comeback and would eventually score 16 of the next 17 points for a commanding 16-7 lead. After the Cougars crawled back into the game, the Golden Eagles scored the final five points of the first half on a Cory Cox (JR/Flushing, Mich.) triple and a put back rebound at the buzzer by Steigenga for a 33-28 lead.
The lead slowly grew over the closing 20 minutes as Cox continued his hot shooting, hitting a pair of long range shots in the opening minutes to push the lead over 10 and that is where the margin hovered for the remainder of the game with CU closing out a solid road win 61-50.
Say What?
