FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Needing two wins to sew up the third seed in next week's conference tournament, the Golden Eagles got just that as they swept host Indiana Tech and Concordia in the final WHAC Crossover of the season. The two victories lift Cornerstone to 26-10 on the season as they finish the WHAC slate at 15-7. CU will head to Lourdes next Friday for the quarterfinals where they will meet sixth seeded Davenport at 2 p.m.
Match 1 - Cornerstone 3, Indiana Tech 0 – 25-19, 26-24, 25-22
Cornerstone knew that they needed this match to have any hope of staying in third place and they posted a convincing sweep of the Warriors who defeated them in five earlier this season.
The senior quartet of Megan Newhouse (SR/Grand Haven, Mich.) (10), Chelsea Lake (SR/Lake Odessa, Mich.) (9), Johanna Egerer (SR/Plymouth, Wisc.) (8) and Murphy Heyer (SR/Rockford, Mich.) (7) combined for 35 kills for CU while the final senior Amber Carmean (SR/Fruitport, Mich.) had a team high 20 digs.
Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, Concordia 0 – 25-13, 25-14, 25-18
The Golden Eagles finished off the 2 for 2 day with a quick sweep of the Cardinals from Concordia in a match that took less than an hour to complete. The win secures third place in the upcoming WHAC Tournament as CU will meet the sixth seed that will be determined on a tie-breaker.
Murphy Heyer led CU with 11 kills while Hope Leppink (SO/Holland, Mich.) was tops with 33 assists and Chelsea Lake with 11 digs.
Notes…
- Cornerstone finished the regular season 26-10 overall and 15-7 in the WHAC
- CU is in third place alone behind Lourdes (22-0) and Madonna (20-2)
Up Next?
Cornerstone will play in the WHAC Quarterfinals next Friday at Lourdes against the No. 6 seed Davenport. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
