GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone used a 21-4 run to end the first half and then held off a furious comeback from the Crusaders to post a 92-90 victory over visiting Madonna on Saturday afternoon. Travis Wells (JR/Eaton Rapids, Mich.) connected on six three-pointers in the contest as he helped No. 8 Cornerstone improve to 21-5 on the year and 15-3 in league play. CU will return to Mol Arena on Wednesday, February 11 to host Siena Heights University at 7:30 p.m.

Game Flow

The opening 10-15 minutes was very back and forth but the last five saw the host Golden Eagles take a 3-point lead (33-30) and turn it into 20 at the break. Travis Wells connected on three triples during the run which were part of his five opening half three-balls for a game high 16 points.

The lead grew even more in the early parts of the second half but the Crusaders slowly started to chip away at the lead and had it down to 10 with just under six minutes to play. Five straight points from Cory Cox (SO/Flushing, Mich.) upped the lead back to 15 and it looked as if CU would run away but another spurt by the Crusaders got the margin down to just two with 37 seconds to play. After some missed free-throws by CU and a jump ball gave the ball back to MU, the visitors has one last shot but it fell short as CU escaped with the 2-point win.

Say What?

"The outcome was good but the body did not go as planned tonight. We had lapses on defense which has not happened much over the past few games and we need to fix some of those items" – Head coach Kim Elders
