KISSIMMEE, Fla. | The Men's Tennis team played it's first two matches of its spring break trip on Monday after having their first match on Saturday rained out. CU started the spring break campaign with a double header against Morningside College & Augustana College and came away with a 9-0 win over the Mustangs and a 6-3 victory over the Vikings.
MORNINGSIDE
The CU Men made quick work of the Mustangs, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after doubles, and completing the sweep with a 9-0 win. There was only one interesting match, where Austin Hendrick (FR/Grand Rapids, Mich.) was pushed to a third set, but pulled out the win in the tie-breaker.
AUGUSTANA
The second match of the day was a much more competitive affair. In doubles, all three matches were very intense, and Augustana took early breaks on all 3 courts. At #1 Doubles, CU fell behind 5-2, before picking up their intensity and winning 6 straight games to complete the 8-5 win and give Cornerstone a 1-0 lead. At #2 Doubles, Cornerstone fell behind and early break and couldn't earn it back, falling to the Vikings 8-4 to square the match at 1 all. At #3 Doubles, Cornerstone held off a very spirited Augustana team for the 8-5 win, to give Cornesrstone the 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Augustana got on the board first in singles, with Elijah Yi (JR/Dallas, Texas) dropping his match 6-1, 6-3 to even up the match at 2 all. Santiago Mackrey (SO/Balcarce, ARG) then won his match 6-3, 6-3 to give Cornerstone the 3-2 lead, which they would never reinquish. Austin Hunt (JR/Odessa, Texas.) won 6-3, 6-4 to put CU on the brink of victory. Andrew Son (JR/Keller, Texas.) then clinched the decisive fifth point with a 6-1, 6-3 win at #6 singles. With the match clinched, Sam Ottosen (FR/Cairns, AUS) dropped his three set match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at #2 singles, while Austin Hendrick won his 6-2, 3-6, (11-9) to give CU the 6-3 win.
SON HITS 75 CAREER WINS
Andrew Son picked up his 75th career collegiate win during his match clinching victory over Augustana, making him the first player in the young history of Cornerstone tennis to reach this milestone. Cogratulations Andrew!
