SOUTHFIELD, Mich. | The Cornerstone Men's & Women's Tennis teams traveled to Southfield, MI today to take on new WHAC opponent Lawrence Tech. Both teams came away with wins to move Men's Tennis to 16-1 on the year, and give Women's Tennis their first ever three match winning streak.
It was a cold, windy, and rainy day in Eastern Michigan, and the courts were slippery & wet, so it was decided that both matches would be played just until they were clinched.
MEN'S TENNIS
The Men's Tennis team started out like the weather, cold. They came out moving slow, but Andrew Son & Santiago Mackrey put CU on the board quickly, with an 8-3 win at #3 Doubles. #1 Doubles took a big early lead, but then stalled at 7-3, and let LTU back into the match with some sloppy play. Still, they were able to close it out at 8-6 to give CU the 2-0 lead. At #3 Doubles, Austin Hendrick and a clearly sick Sam Ottosen never quicte found their rhythm against a very spirited LTU #2, but they were able to pull themselves together enough late to close out the doubles with a 9-7 win. It wasn't a pretty doubles performance, but it was enough for CU to sweep the doubles for the 11th time this season.
In singles play, Andrew Son won very quickly at #6 Singles 6-0, 6-3. After a brief rain delay, Santiago Mackrey closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 Singles. The rest of the matches were suspended, with CU leading on most courts.
This marks Men's Tennis first team win in WHAC play in program history.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
The Women's Tennis team started out strong in doubles and never looked back. The #2 Doubles team of Ashley Greene & Heidi Boesl got up big early and finished quickly with an 8-3 win. The #1 Doubles team of Janie Silvers and Allison Rusticus went up an early break and then held on for the 8-6 win to give CU a 2-0 lead heading into singles.
Lawrence Tech would tie the match after Heidi Boesl fell at #1 Singles and Nicole Huizenga lost at #5. Janie Silvers then gave CU the lead for good with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #2 Singles. Allison Rusticus then clinched the match for the third time in a row with a 6-0, 6-2 win at #3 Singles.
With the win, CU Women's Tennis has its first ever three match win streak and sets the program record for wins in a season.
