Men’s Tennis wins first ever WHAC Tourney match

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles made school history today as they posted a 5-4 win over Indiana Tech in the WHAC Quarterfinals before falling to No. 7 Northwestern Ohio in the semifinal round. Cornerstone finishes the season with an 18-7 overall record, which marks the best record in program history.



Cornerstone 5, Indiana Tech 4

The first match of the day turned into an instant classic as Cornerstone took the early edge of 2-1 after doubles. CU won 8-6 behind the No. 3 doubles team of Santiago Mackrey and Andrew Son and got their other point on a great comeback from Elijah Yi and Austin Hunt. The duo were down 6-2 in the tiebreaker to their opponent but rallied to score six unanswered points to win 9-7 (8-6).

In singles, Indiana Tech struck first with a pair of wins on the top two courts to take a 3-2 lead. Cornerstone got their first point in singles from Austin Hunt as the senior won in three sets. The final three matches also went the distance with each CU and IT winning to have it come down to the fifth court and Austin Hendrick. The freshman was behind 5-4 in the third set with his opponent serving but Hendrick fought off a couple of match points and won three straight games to claim the final point with the 7-5 win in the 3rd.

 

No. 7 Northwestern Ohio 5, Cornerstone 0

Making their first ever appearance in the semifinal round of the conference tournament, the Golden Eagles were a little overmatched by the No. 7 ranked team in the country as the Racers posted the 5-0 win. UNOH took the three doubles matches 8-2, 8-4 and 8-2.

They then followed with a pair of wins in singles to finish the match off 5-0

 

Cornerstone concludes their season with an 18-7 overall record.
