7-2 win over Bethel jump starts men's tennis campaign

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - Opening Day of the 201-16 men's tennis season got off to a very slow start with poor weather but after seeing their initial match with Goshen wiped out due to rain, the Golden Eagles posted an impressive 7-2 win over Bethel College. The team used a 3-0 edge in doubles and followed with four out of six wins in singles to start the campaign with a win. CU will host Huntington and Olivet Nazarene this weekend.



Doubles Highlights - Cornerstone started the match with three straight wins in doubles as Santiago Mackrey (JR/Balcarce, ARG) and Andrew Son (SR/Keller, Texas) posted the most convincing win at No. 3 by the final of 8-2. Austin Hendrick (SO/Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Sam Ottosen (SO/Cairns, AUS) won 8-3 at No. 2 while Elijah Yi (SR/Dallas, Texas) and Austin Hunt (SR/Odessa, Texas.) won 8-5 at the top.

 

Singles Highlights - Finishing out a perfect day with two wins for the Golden Eagles were Andrew Son (6-3, 6-1 at No. 5), Austin Hunt (6-1, 6-2 at No. 4), Santiago Mackrey (6-1, 6-1 at No. 3) and Austin Hendrick (6-1, 6-1 at No. 2).

 

What's Next? Cornerstone will play a pair of home matches on Friday and Saturday when they welcome in Huntington (Ind.) on September 4 and then Olivet Nazarene on September 5. Both matches will be played at NorthPointe Christian HS.
