GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Cornerstone bounced back from their first loss of the season with a narrow 5-4 win Saturday morning over Lake Superior State. With the win, CU moves their record to 3-1 and the Golden Eagles will be the ITA regionals that begin on Thursday hosted by Davenport University.
Doubles Highlights: Doubles play started with two quick victories for the Golden Eagles. Austin Hendrick (SO/Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Sam Ottosen (SO/Cairns, AUS) won 8-4 at No. 1, while Andrew Son (SR/Keller, Texas) and Santiago Mackrey (JR/Balcarce, ARG) finished with an 8-3 victory at No. 2. Austin Hunt (SR/Odessa, Texas.) and Brad Miedema (SR/Allendale, Mich.) suffered the only doubles loss for CU 9-8 in a tiebreaker.
Singles Highlights: LSSU fought back in singles play, but Cornerstone held on with a trio of wins by Hendrick (6-3, 6-1), Mackrey (6-0, 6-4), and Son (6-4, 6-1). Ottosen also played strong in his first appearance at No. 1 singles this season, but in the end ultimately fell in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 3-6.
Next Up? Cornerstone will play their first tournament of the fall, as they will enter the ITA regionals Thursday through Saturday. The ITA regional competition will be hosted by Davenport University.
