Volleyball upsets No. 9 Lourdes in four sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone Volleyball team picked up a huge 4-set win over No. 9 Lourdes on Wednesday night as they ended the Gray Wolves' 37-match regular season WHAC winning streak. The victory lifts the Golden Eagles to 27-7 overall and 13-1 in league play as they will look to extend their own winning streak to 18 when they play at Siena Heights on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Match Flow…

Set one was controlled by the Gray Wolves and their powerful offense as they hit .314 in route to a 25-21 win. LU built a 7-point lead midway through and held off a late CU rally to score three out of the final four points for the 4-point win.

As good as the LU offense was in the opener, the CU defense then shut them down in the final three as CU took the match with 25-23, 26-24, 25-22 wins in sets 2-4. The Golden Eagles limited the Gray Wolves to a .178 hitting percentage in the second, .082 in the third and .159 in the fourth to post their second straight win over a Top-25 foe.

After CU tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 win in the second, they found themselves trailing 17-10 in the third as Lourdes was in full control. CU then responded with a 13-6 run to tie it and then scored the final three points (two from Kendra Zwart blocks) to win 26-24.

The Golden Eagles put away the Gray Wolves with a dominant fourth set that saw them lead by as many as eight (20-12) but LU would not give in as they rallied to get within one (23-22) but CU scored the final two points on a block and kill to post the 4-set win.
