GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The WHAC season got underway and it started with a thriller, as Cornerstone mounted a few late defensive stops to earn a 59-56 victory over Siena Heights University. The Golden Eagles now move above .500 on the year with a 3-2,1-0 WHAC record. CU will remain in Grand Rapids, as they have a date with Marygrove College here in Mol Arena on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
Game Flow
After falling behind 12-6 early in the first quarter, Cornerstone mounted an 18-2 run to end the period led by four steals that gave
Jesse Sheridan the opportunity to find her rhythm from behind the arc hitting three deed balls. The Saints were able to gain some ground back with the duo of Azalea Miller and April Watson cutting the CU lead to 34-29 at the halftime break.
Siena Heights came out with energy to begin the third pounding the ball inside and getting to the line eventually giving them the lead back at 48-47 at the end of the period. The fourth quarter began with back and fourth action and big defensive stops by both teams.
Lizzy Otten was able to score a big layup with 4:37 to go that game CU the biggest lead of the period at four points. CU then put up multiple defensive stops before giving up a bucket that cu their lead to 58-56 with 42 seconds remaining. One last defensive stop and a free throw by
Ellery Mast is what allowed the Golden Eagles to hold on to earn a 59-56 victory.

Shaina DenBesten recorded a team high eight rebounds in the win, earning an early career high for the freshman.
