WHAC play opens Wednesday for No. 8 Men’s Basketball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After posting a pair of wins in their first games away from Mol Arena this season, the No. 8 ranked men's basketball team will be back in Grand Rapids Wednesday when they open conference play vs. Marygrove. CU will then head to Ann Arbor for a matchup against the Cardinals of Concordia. Both games will be live via the Cornerstone Sports Network.

Scouting Marygrove College – Head coach Craig Covington
The Mustangs enter the week with an overall record of 1-6 after a 90-74 setback at NCAA DI Western Michigan last Friday. Marygrove, under the direction of fourth year head coach Craig Covington, has a deep roster that features three seniors, seven juniors, one sophomore and five freshman. So far in 2016-17, the Mustangs have been led by Nate Taylor who is averaging 18.0 points per game and T.K. Dixson who joins him in double-figures at 10.9 points per game. As a team, the Mustangs are putting up 74.7 points while allowing 90.1.

Scouting Concordia
Head coach Ricky Yahn, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the program, enter the week with an overall record of 2-2. The Cardinals, who play Siena Heights on Wednesday before hosting CU Saturday, have lost their last two outings to Goshen (Ind) and Cincinnati Christian. CUAA has a very balanced lineup that features five players in double-figures led by Jerald Booker at 14.5 and he is followed by Jalen Thompson (12.8) and Conner Phee (12.5). As a team. the Cardinals are averaging 77.5 while allowing 72.0.

WHAC Openers
Cornerstone, under head coach Kim Elders, is 16-6 in WHAC Openers and 19-3 in WHAC games played at home. The Golden Eagles have won eight straight conference openers including a 63-54 win over Lourdes last season as their last loss in the opener was in 2007-08 to Aquinas. CU has won its last two conference home openers after falling to Davenport in 2013-14.

Kim Elders has a .795 winning percentage in his career against WHAC schools (291-86). CU is 45-5 against Concordia over that time and 13-0 against Marygrove.

Cornerstone enters the 2016-17 campaign looking for WHAC regular season title No. 9. The last regular season championship came in 2014-15.
