First 5-set loss of year closes out 2016 campaign for Volleyball

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – After winning sets two and three, it looked as if CU would extend their season to the final site of the 2016 NAIA Volleyball championship but the host Union Bulldogs rallied to take the next two to claim the match in five sets. It marks the first 5-set loss for Cornerstone this year after going 10-0 before Saturday and they close 2016 with an overall record of 32-9.

Match Flow…

The offense struggled to get going into the school's first national tournament appearance since 2004 as the Golden Eagles hit just .051 in the opener as they fell 25-20. CU roared back in the second to claim a 25-11 win and the look of the WHAC Champions was back.

CU then found themselves trailing 23-18 in the third set but a huge 7-point run closed out the 25-23 win to put the Golden Eagles up 2-1 in the match. CU then had an 11-10 lead in the third set but Union scored eight of the next 11 points to lead 18-14 and they went on to win 25-19.

Playing in a 5th set is nothing new to the Golden Eagles but they fell behind early 8-3 at the side switch. CU rallied to get within 10-6 but the Bulldogs had every answer, eventually closing the Golden Eagles out 15-8.
