GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone finished the night shooting 53.7 % from the field while limiting Calvin College to just 33.9% as they ran away with a 28-point win over the Knights in the opening game of the GR Sports Hall of Fame Classic. The victory is the seventh consecutive for the Golden Eagles as they are now 7-1 on the year and they will return to action on Saturday night against the host Flying Dutchmen of Hope College at 8 p.m.
Game Flow
After Calvin connected on a 3-pointer on the second possession of the game, Cornerstone exploded for an 11-0 run which was finished by back to back layups from
Kyle Steigenga and the 13-3 margin forced Calvin into a timeout. That lead continued to grow behind the hot-shooting of
Cory Cox as the senior hit a trio of 3-pointers which put CU up 21-9 at the halfway mark of the first half. The lead grew to as big as 18 but Calvin closed the half by nailing a fade away jumper at the buzzer to make it 42-27 at the break.
Cox then opened the second half with a jumper and the lead quickly went above 20 and after a
Riley Costen layup with 16:46 to play, CU was up 50-29. The largest lead came in the final seconds on a pair of free-throws from
Lance Martin which put CU up 28.
