Third quarter run leads Women’s Basketball past rival Aquinas 72-65

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A 24-15 third quarter run helps the Golden Eagles earn a 72-65 win over rival Aquinas College to snap a two game losing streak. Cornerstone moves their record back above .500 with the win and improves their conference record to 3-1 on the year. Next game for CU will come on Saturday when they travel to No. 21 Indiana Tech for a 1 p.m. tip.

Game Flow
The first half was heavily back and fourth after AQ started the game on a 7-2 run, that CU responded to with a 9-2 run of their own. Aquinas began to find their stroke from behind the arc in the second quarter going 3-4, and that along with a first half 8-12 mark from the free throw line gave the Saints the edge 35-31 at the break. Aquinas sophomore Hannah Brefeld led all scores with 16 points in the first half, while Shaina DenBesten had a Cornerstone team high eight.

Cornerstone came out firing in the third quarter hitting 3-4 threes, with two of those coming from guard Lizzy Otten helping CU pull away from the Saints for a 55-50 lead. Aquinas fought their way back into the game in the fourth quarter cutting the Golden Eagle lead to just two with 2:06 remaining, but clutch buckets by Cass Vredevoogd and Lizzy Otten helped Cornerstone secure a 72-65 victory.

Quotable…
"The leaders went into the half knowing we can step up our play. We wanted to come out strong, getting back to the basics in the second half and really play as a team. Doing that is what really gave us control of the game down the stretch."   - Cass Vredevoogd, Forward
