GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Cornerstone Volleyball team opens postseason play on Wednesday when they welcome Siena Heights to Mol Arena for a 7 p.m. match. The Golden Eagles, who claimed a share of the regular season title, are the No. 3 seed in the tourney while the Saints are the No. 6 seed. The winners advances to play No. 2 Madonna on Friday at 5 p.m. in the semifinals at Lourdes University.
Scouting Siena Heights
Head coach Kim Berrington and her team enter the season's third matchup with Cornerstone with an identical record as they posted in her first season of 21-11. The Saints defeated Lawrence Tech in the first round of the tourney to reach the quarterfinal round as they have been led by freshman Paige Hudgin who is averaging 3.43 kills per set. Amanda Metz runs the offense for SHU as the setter is posting 8.94 assists per set to go along with almost three digs per set.
Regular Season vs. Siena Heights
Cornerstone won both meetings between the two schools during the regular season as the Golden Eagles won 3-1 in Grand Rapids and 3-2 in Adrian. The last time the two teams met was the last weekend of the regular season where CU rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win a thrilling 5-set match to keep their WHAC title hopes alive. In their meeting in GR, the Golden Eagles won sets 1-2-4 (25-17 25-16, 25-15) while SHU won the third set 25-19.
5-Set Wonders
Cornerstone has posted a 9-0 mark in five-set matches this year including last week's thrilling win at Siena Heights to keep their WHAC title hopes alive.
WHAC Champions
Cornerstone claimed its fifth ever WHAC regular season title with a 15-1 finish in league matches this season. They tied Lourdes atop the standings and it marks the fifth time CU has shared the title, but first with a school not named Madonna. CU also claimed the titles in 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2004.
WHAC Tournament History
Cornerstone has won three WHAC Tournament titles in program history but the last came back in 2003. CU also claimed the top spot in 1999 and 2001.
