GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles held the lead from start to finish in this one, but the Cougars hung around until a game ending 15-6 run gave CU the 61-52 victory. The win keeps the Golden Eagles above the .500 mark, as they improve to 8-6 on the year. Cornerstone will take nine days off for the Holiday's before returning to action in the Davenport Holiday Classic against top ranked Saint Francis of Illinois.
Game Flow
The Cornerstone defense came out strong, holding Saint Francis to just 3-16 from the field in the opening quarter. The strong defense along with seven first quarter points by
Cass Vredevoogd helped CU earn an early 15-9 lead. Saint Francis kept up with the quick Golden Eagle pace in the second quarter scoring 13 points on 5-19 shooting to keep the CU lead to just six points at halftime.
The offense started to pick up in the third quarter for both sides, as
Jesse Sheridan was perfect from the field scoring seven points in the period. USF was still able to cut into the lead though, hitting all four of the team's three pointers in the third quarter. Saint Francis kept the offensive momentum going into the fourth quarter tying the game at 46 with 5:28 to go, but an 8-10 mark from the free throw line down the stretch helped CU end the game on a 15-6 run to earn the win.
