BELLEVUE, Neb. – The Golden Eagles went 0-2 on day one of the Labor Day Classic in Bellevue, Nebraska falling 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 24-26) to Peru State College and 3-0 (17-25, 21-25, 16-25) to the host Bruins. CU falls to 3-3 on the year as they will pick up play tomorrow against Culver-Stockton College and Briar-Cliff University.
Match 1 – Peru State (Neb.) 3, Cornerstone 1 – 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 24-26
Cornerstone got off to an early one set lead, but 28 total errors led to a comeback for Peru State who took the match in four sets. CU fell behind early, but winning 10 of the last 12 points helped the Golden Eagles take the first set 25-19.
The Bobcats then came back with three straight set victories closing the match by winning the last six points to rebound from a fourth set 24-20 deficit. PSC leader Yorgelys Jaspe recorded 18 kills, hitting at a .176 clip on the way to the victory, while
Maria Ma had another great outing for CU in the loss with 12 kills.
Match 2 –Bellevue 3, Cornerstone 0 – 25-17, 25-21, 25-16
The home Bruins got off to a fast start against Cornerstone and never let up defeating the Golden Eagles in set one 25-17 and recording a .231 hitting percentage.
CU came out much stronger in set two holding a 7-2 lead early, but power server U'I Kepani helped BU score five straight points to tie the game back up at 7-7. Kepani continued her serving success winning another eight straight points down the stretch leading to a 25-21 win for the Bruins in set two.
The Golden Eagles could not rebound from the two set deficit in the third game as they fell 16-25.
Kenzie Engelsma recorded a team high nine kills and .304 hitting percentage in the match, while
Heather Green led the team with 13 digs.
Notes…
- Cornerstone recorded a season high 89 digs in the loss against Peru State today.
- The Golden Eagles recorded 32 blocks on the day 30 of those being assisted.
- Junior Maria Ma recorded a career high .294 hitting percentage in game one.
