GR Sports Hall of Fame Classic starts Friday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – One of the best small college basketball tournaments of the year gets underway for the 22nd time this weekend on the campus of Aquinas College as CU will take on Hope College and Calvin College in the annual GR Sports Hall of Fame Classic. Cornerstone has won its last five games in the classic and will play the Dutchmen on Friday and Knights on Saturday.

Scouting Hope – Head coach Greg Mitchell
Fourth year head coach Greg Mitchell and the Flying Dutchmen are 1-1 on the year after falling to Marietta and defeating St. John Fisher last weekend. Jason Beckman leads the team in scoring, averaging 22.0 points per game while he is followed in double-figures by Riley Lewis (14.0) and Preston Granger (12.0). Returning All-MIAA selection Dante Hawkins has played in just one game for Hope so far as he looks to lead the team during his senior campaign. He averaged 16.5 points per game last year and had 18 in the game between CU and Hope last season.

Scouting Calvin – Head coach Kevin Vande Streek
Veteran head coach Kevin Vande Streek leads the Knights into the tourney this weekend at 1-2 overall as they won their last game, a 96-86 victory over Wheaton. Calvin, picked third in the MIAA preseason poll, has been led so far this season by freshman Luke Morrison (14.0 points per game) as well as juniors Austin Bykerk (12.7) and Carlos Amoros-Gutierrez (10.7). Senior Michael Wilks is also in double-figures at 10.7 points per night and fellow 4th year man Tony Canonie had a team-high 17 points in the Knights' win over Wheaton.
 

GR Sports Hall of Fame History
Cornerstone will participate in the 22nd annual Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic this weekend. The tourney started in 1996 and has featured NCAA DII Grand Valley State, NAIA programs Cornerstone and Aquinas and NCAA DIII foes Hope and Calvin College.
 
History in the Hall of Fame Classic
Cornerstone owns six championships in their 20 years participating in the tourney as they took home the titles in 2001, 2004, 2009, 2013, 2015 and 2016. The Golden Eagles have an overall record of 22-18 and they have won 12 of their last 15 including four perfect years in 2009, 2013, 2015 and 2016.
