GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 2 ranked Golden Eagles led by 13 at the break and increased it to as many as 25 in the first 10 minutes of the second half as they posted a 77-63 road win at rival Aquinas on Wednesday night. The victory is their third in a row for CU on the Saints' home court after they won the GR Sports Hall of Fame Classic over the weekend and ups the season record to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the WHAC. Cornerstone will welcome in No. 5 Indiana Tech on Saturday for a 3 p.m. Top-5 showdown.
Game Flow
It was a defensive struggle over the first 10 minutes of the game after CU raced out to a 9-2 lead. Aquinas held tough on their defensive end to stay within five but a late 10-2 run put the Golden Eagles up 33-20 at the break. A late
Tyler Baker triple was the last points of the half and it would be a sign of things to come in the second.
Two free-throws by
Kyle Steigenga, four straight points from
Riley Costen and a layup from
Michael Bradshaw marked the first eight points scored of the second half as Cornerstone upped their lead to 21 in the first 3:06. The lead continued to grow over the first 10 minutes and after a triple from
Michael Bradshaw with 10:06 remaining, the lead was at 25.
CU led by as many as 28 (69-41) with just under five minutes to play when Steigenga scored his final points of the night.
