SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Thanks to a .282 hitting percentage and 10.5 Team Blocks, the No 16 ranked Golden Eagles' Volleyball team posted a 3-0 sweep of Texas Wesleyan on Wednesday afternoon. The victory lifts Cornerstone to 28-7 overall on the season as they are now 1-1 in Pool A with one match remaining on Thursday against No. 1 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.). CU will need a win to stay alive for a potential Friday match in the Round of 16.
Match Flow…
The three sets all followed the same pattern with each team trading points for a majority of the first 10-15 points. The opening set saw the Golden Eagles grab an early lead of two points and then they used a 6-2 run to take a 22-16 lead after a kill from senior
Hope Leppink. That lead would hold for the last few points as the Golden Eagles won 25-18.
Set two was pretty tight until CU went on a 7-3 spurt to open a 19-16 lead and the Rams never got any closer with two kills by
Kendra Zwart and two from
Bailey Cummings to close out the 25-18 win.
Cornerstone was in control for much of the third set and led 22-19 with their sights set on a sweep but Texas Wesleyan battled back with a 5-0 run to take a 24-22 lead forcing head coach
Ryan Campbell to use both of his timeouts. The Golden Eagles responded with two
Heather Carlson kills and an
Ellie Van Laar kill and block, followed by one Ram hitting error to win 28-26.
