SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Cornerstone used a huge third quarter run to open a 20 point lead and then held off a furious comeback to post a 65-54 upset of No. 22 Lawrence Tech on Saturday afternoon. The victory is career win number 100 for head coach
Katie Mattera as the Golden Eagles improve to 7-8 overall and 4-3 in WHAC play. CU will host Bethel College on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference tilt.
Game Flow
Through the first seven games of conference play, the Golden Eagles have wins over the top two teams in the standings after posting an impressive road win at Lawrence Tech today. The Blue Devils jumped out to a quick 9-5 lead in the opening three minutes of the game but CU closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to lead 14-9. The two teams would then step up their offensive game in the second with the Golden Eagles winning the quarter by two (17-15) as they took a 31-24 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter was all Cornerstone in the early going as they scored 16 of the first 19 points to open a 47-27 lead and they would eventually lead 52-36 at the end of three quarters. LTU then mounted a big comeback as they had the lead down to as few as five on three different occasions but they would get no closer with the CU defense holding strong to post their second Top-25 win of the season.
