Final second shot thwarts comeback for Women’s Basketball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cornerstone trailed by as many as 11 midway through the third quarter but a valiant comeback was thwarted by a last second shot for No. 6 Davenport as CU fell 61-59 on Saturday afternoon. Game Flow
Davenport, who came into the game undefeated in WHAC play, jumped out to a 7-0 lead but the Golden Eagles chipped away at the margin and took their first lead with 8:56 remaining in the second quarter on a Jesse Sheridan layup. The lead would change hands three more times in the opening half before DU made a free-throw with under two seconds to go up 28-27.

The Panthers then opened the second half on an 8-0 run to go back up by nine as Lizzy Otten ended the spurt with a jumper. The lead would remain at eight at the end of the third quarter and was seven with under five minutes to play but a 10-2 run gave CU a 57-56 lead with 2:00 to play. After tying it one more time at 59, CU had the ball with 45 seconds but were unable to get a bucket and Davenport came down and hit a runner in the lane with 5.3 remaining to pull out the win.
