Women’s Hoops clinch WHAC Tournament berth with 64-52 win

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Golden Eagles used a 20-4 run in the second quarter to gain a lead that carried them throughout the game, on their way to a 64-52 win. The victory clinches a conference tournament spot for CU as they are now 14-15, 11-10 WHAC. Cornerstone will conclude the regular season with a 1 p.m. tip vs. Northwestern Ohio for senior night.

Game Flow
Both Cornerstone and Aquinas got off to a very slow shooting start as a total of six points combined were scored through the first four minutes of the game. CU trailed 11-10 to begin the second quarter, but then started to dominate offensively going on a 20-4 run to end the half to gain a 30-15 advantage. Ellery Mast made an impact in multiple ways in the half with six points, five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.

Aquinas came out in the second half with strong intentions to mount a comeback, but CU shut down all of those hopes having a response to every AQ bucket resulting in a 49-36 score after three quarters of play. The Saints continued to fight in the fourth, cutting the deficit to just seven with 2:37 to go in the game, but a couple late buckets by Lizzy Otten and Shaina DenBesten helped seal the victory for the Golden Eagles.

By the Numbers
11/9/3/2 – Ellery Mast was doing it all on the floor tonight with 11 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two blocks on the game.
14-28 – CU shot 50% in the second half, going 14-28 from the field.
45-38 – The Golden Eagles outrebounded the Saints by seven for the game.
31 – Jesse Sheridan (16) and Lizzy Otten (15) combined for 31 of the Golden Eagle 64 points for the game.

Quotable…
"We did what we had to do to earn a road win and clinch a spot in the tournament. I thought our girls did a great job of responding to Aquinas' efforts to get back into the game throughout the second half, and we need to continue play that way as we move forward." – Head Coach, Katie Matera
