Baseball concludes series with pair of losses to Ecclesia

SPRINGDALE, Ark. – The offense sputtered in the final day of a four game set in Springdale, Arkansas, as the Golden Eagles dropped a pair to Ecclesia College losing 5-1 and 5-4 in extra innings. CU now moves to 4-8 overall on the year. Cornerstone will return to action next weekend, as they begin a 12 game trip in Lake Myrtle, Florida vs. Mount Vernon Nazarene.
Game Flow

Game 1Brett Shure started for the first time of the spring, and settled in pretty well after giving up an early first inning run on a wild pitch that gave Ecclesia a 1-0 lead. The Royals were then able to add an insurance run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly that brought their lead to 2-0.

CU then made it interesting, as Joe Corsten hit his second HR of the weekend to bring the deficit back to one. Cornerstone could not keep it close though, as the Ecclesia hitters scored three in the bottom of the sixth to put the game out of reach and earn a 5-1 win. Royals pitcher Madison Bates threw a complete game striking out nine Golden Eagle batters.

Game 2Kyle Herrick started game two and similarly to game one, the CU pitcher struggled early giving up a two run double in the first, but then settled in not allowing another hit until the bottom of the seventh. Cornerstone immediately responded to the 2-0 deficit with four runs in the second inning, highlighted by Brady Volmering and Brady Eeles RBI doubles. Ecclesia cut the CU lead back to one with a run off a wild pitch in the third making it 4-3.

Cornerstone looked like they were going to walk out with a 4-3 victory, as Kyle Herric was one out away from a complete game victory, but a pinch-hit solo homerun by Robbie Rodriguez tied the game at 4-4 bringing it into extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth Ecclesia dropped down a bunt that CU was unable to handle cleanly allowing the game winning run to score giving the Royals a 5-4 victory.
