No. 21 Men's Tennis falls 7-2 to No. 17 Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 21 ranked men's tennis team played one of the biggest matches in its short history since restarting the program in 2011-12 but the Saints of Aquinas College proved to be too tough as they posted a 7-2 win over the Golden Eagles. The loss drops Cornerstone to 13-6 on the year and 1-1 in the WHAC as they will face Top-5 foe Northwestern Ohio on Saturday in Lima.

Cornerstone faced an uphill battle against #17 Aquinas today because #2 singles player Francisco Fernandez was out due to illness which caused the Golden Eagles to have to forfeit a singles' and a doubles match as well.   As it turned out, the Saints wrapped up the victory with wins in both of the doubles matches and a win at #5 singles before moving on to the remaining singles matches.  The Golden Eagles did pick up two wins in singles to finish the match 2-7.

Doubles Highlights:  Marc Lerch played with Grant Morton in doubles because Fernandez was out and they lost in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-2). Ottosen and Hendrick moved up to the top court and fell 8-5.

Singles Highlights: #1 Marc Lerch defeated Gunner Perry 6-2, 6-2 for the most dominant win of the day.  #4 Sam Ottosen had the gutsiest win, rallying from behind to defeat Will Buurma 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 for Cornerstone's other point.

Next Up? The road for the Golden Eagles will now take them to Lima, Ohio to take on #4 Northwestern Ohio on Saturday, April 8th.
