FULLERTON, Calif. – Two more late night matches awaited the No. 16 ranked Golden Eagles on Thursday night and head coach
Ryan Campbell and his team posted a 3-1 upset of No. 9 Corban before sweeping The Masters (Calif.). The pair of wins lift Cornerstone to 4-0 on the year as they will be in action next Thursday against No. 7 Westmont and Vanguard at the La Sierra Tourney in Riverside. Calif.
Match 1 – Cornerstone 3, Eastern Oregon 1 (30-28, 18-25, 25-23, 25-23)
Cornerstone pulled out a trio of 2-point wins while dropping the second set against their first of two NAIA Top-10 foes out in California.
Heather Carlson led the way with 14 kills while
Mackenzie Vallad had 20 digs and
Hope Leppink 49 assists.
CU, which was won of the top blocking teams in the NAIA a year ago, was led by seven from
Kendra Zwart.
Match 2 – Cornerstone 3, The Masters 0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-16)
The nightcap was a late one for the Golden Eagles as the match did not start until after midnight eastern time. CU was able to get some new looks on the court and it did not faze them as they posted their second sweep of the HIU/Vanguard Summer Slam.
Bailey Cummings and
Kendra Zwart each finished with 10 kills while Leppink handed out 30 assists and
Kenzie Engelsma had a team-high 13 digs.
Notes…
- This is the first time in all the CU trips to California, dating back to 2002, that the Golden Eagles have finished 4-0 in a single tourney
- No. 9 Corban is the highest ranked team CU has defeated since No. 9 Lourdes last October

Cornerstone will remain in California for some site-seeing and practices and they will return to action on Thursday, August 24 when they face Vanguard (Calif.) and No. 7 Westmont (Calif.) at the La Sierra Tournament in Riverside.
