CHICAGO, Ill. – The Golden Eagles got off to a great start to the 2017 season, scoring a trio of goals on their way to a 3-1 victory at Saint Xavier University. The young Cornerstone roster controlled much of the games possession, tallying 22 shots (13 on goal) and allowing the opposing Cougars to record just three shots (two on goal). CU will complete their weekend road trip in Illinois at Saint Francis tomorrow for a 6 p.m. EST start.
Game Flow…
Cornerstone got off to a fast start, as a pair of freshman connected when
Taylor Pratt assisted a goal by
Raelee VandenBerg in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead. It wasn't long before SXU found their lone response, as Andreina Hernandez scored in the 22
nd minute to tie the game at one.
The Golden Eagles, holding much of the possession throughout, broke the tie in the 26
th minute when another freshman in
Phoebe LaCroix found sophomore
Maddie Tassonie for a goal to make it 2-1 at the half.
Holding on to a slim one goal lead for much of the second half, CU managed to find an insurance goal late in the match when
Erica Mick found the net on a cross from
Alyssa Dykstra, giving the Golden Eagles a 3-1 win in their season opener.
Inside the Box…
- Mikayla Johnson did not see much action in net, recording just one save in her first collegiate start as keeper.
- Morgan Haddad and Raelee VandenBerg each tallied four shots.
- The match saw a total of 21 fouls (11 on Cornerstone and 10 on Saint Xavier), while each team was handed one yellow card.
